Health risks: Contamination between beta fish tank and parakeet?

I have a budgie. I’ve wanted to get a small tank with a beta fish, and I’ve had a variety of fish in the past. I haven’t had them since I’ve gotten my budgie, though, and I’m concerned about the contamination of one species to another.

I’m concerned about the health risks of my bird’s poops getting in the tank, as far as the fish is concerned, and about my bird ingesting water from the tank. Neither could possibly be healthy for either party.

Do you have any thoughts/knowledge you’d like to share on this?

Please, don’t worry anymore about this. There are plenty things out there to worry about, but this isn’t one of them. The bird could drink fish water exclusively with no ill effects. I

This is irrelevant, but I used to sell 20 gallon aquariums with a glassed bird enclosure inside the tank. Fish could swim all around the birds. Was really neat!

But seriously, go ahead with your plans for birds and fish. Good luck!

Fish water is not the healthiest water for your budgie to drink, and bird droppings are not the healthiest thing in your betta’s water. Either animal could risk infection from the bacteria that would grow as a result of the droppings.

I would be equally concerned about the possiblity of the budgie drowing. If there is enough of an opening at the top of the tank for the budgie to drink from, and deposit his droppings into, then there is enough room for him to get into the tank and drown.

if you get a betta kit from wal-mart it will have a small tank with a lid… that’s what we use. it also stops them from jumping out of the bowl.

Got something to say?
