What kind of toys should i buy my parakeet?

I have heard that mirrors are not good because they may get too friendly with the “other parakeet” and forget about you or be territorial and attack the mirror and hurt themselves. Is that true?

They love mirrors and bells- he should also have a cuddle bone to keep his beak from overgrowing

A mirror is a good one, a cuttlebone is good, as well as the small rope toys with things to chew on.

I have two parakeets. From experience they love cuttlebones. Always always always have one in the cage.

They also love little balls that they can push around on the bottom of the cage.

They love ladders that they can go up and down.

One of them also loves this raw hide toy with a bell on the bottom of it. Every time we try taking it out of the cage, it screams at us. And then it pulls the bell non stop for the following 48 hours.

Make sure theres something with beads too, that they can slide back and forth.

Try different toys, as that every bird is different. These are just the ones that my birds like. But the cuttlebone is a must.

What you need toy wise is,

    2 Wooden perches
    1 Rope Perch
1 Tree Bark like perch [they are like black brownish and not smooth]
    1 Rope pull toy
    2 bells
    2 plastic toys
1 Green Snuggle Thing [Maybe called Happy-Hut]

And you are right about mirrors. They will forget and get territorial.

    Congrads on your new friend!,

PS: remember dont put all the toys in at once and rearange the cage every 2-3 weeks with new toys. Also move all but one perch, So they have one thing the same. And email me with any questions.

It’s true that mirrors aren’t good. We had one in my cockatiel’s cage for a while and he started bonding with his reflection. We had to take it out. I would buy your parakeet a variety of toys.. Going over them to make sure they’re safe. All of the birds that I’ve had loved their ladders, and love things that make noise such as toys that have bells attatched to them.

They love toys that are colorful and that have mirrors and shiny objects in them.

Bells, rope toys, beaded toys, wooden toys, metal toys, rubber toys, just anything that it seems interested in! Mirrors are usually not a good idea as toys because most of the time (yes, there are exceptions so I don’t want emails saying “mine has a mirror and still loves me”) the bird will decide to bond with the reflection and not with you. You can also make your own toys out of wooden spools, pony beads on a shoestring, dried orange and lemon peels and dried fruit strung up, pretty much anything can be a toy! For more toy ideas, go to
