Why won’t my parakeet play with the new toys I got him?
I’ve had my parkeet for 2-3 months, and today I bought him a few new toys. I put them in his cage, but he won’t play with them. He’s even scared of them!
Why is this, and how can I get him to be less afraid?

Some birds don’t seem to be interested in toys. I’ve had several budgies and only one has shown an interest in toys.
I would sit near your little guy and speak to him in a soothing voice to calm him down. Try shutting your eyes occasionally as you talk to him. I heard that when a budgie squeezes his eyes shut to you, it means that he trusts you.
He’s just afraid of them because theyre new things to him and hes not used to them, maybe like touch them a little or play with them yourself in front of him and put them back, try to make him jealous about them or something, but sometimes animals just wont play with certain toys. I know my dog wont play with squeaky things. The noise frightens him.
I doubt he has any idea what they are or what he’s supposed to be doing with them.

i have parkeets too. i have two of them and when i 1st got them toys they were scared too..it just takes time when you put somthing new in their cage…you got to understand in their eyes your a freakin giant so you have to be real gentle and pet them alot..at 1st they’ll look uncomforable but thats only bcuz they wouldn’t expect a giant to be so friendly..
be patient and the good will reveal
well, if they jingle or make noise, then sometimes they scare birds. and sometimes birds just don’t like toys. besides, the toys have only been in there for a day.
This is a common response of birds to new things. Attach the toys to the OUTSIDE of the cage so your parakeet doesn’t feel threatened by them and can inspect them without fear. When he begins to play with one put it inside the cage.
Hi, Only add one toy at time in one corner of the cage. Give the bird a few week to get the nerve up to play with it. It may be a toy to you but it’s a new weird unknow THING to your bird.
I also have 2 parakeets, I bought new toys for them. One of them played for a few minutes and then lost total interest. The other one seemed terrified.
Now they play quite happily with the toys. TIP: don’t use mirror toys as I put one in and my bird thought it was another bird and started screeching at the reflection.
To get them your bird interested at first start off with smaller toys, it worked with me. Then u should change them once in a while as they loose interest in the toys.
